Taking Card Payments

Stripe with Tap to Pay or an Ozync terminal — or keep your Square account and Square Terminal

Overview

Checkout is built into Ozync: mark a client served, confirm the amount, take the card. Who processes that card is your choice — Stripe or Square. You pick once; the rest of checkout, Transactions and refunds look the same either way.

Pay links — Venmo, Zelle, Google Pay, Cash App — need no processor at all. Turn them on under Settings → Payment → Payment Methods and a scannable code shows at checkout.

1

Choose Your Card Processor

Settings → Payment → Card processor  (ozync.com: Payments)

New to card payments? Start with Stripe.

Tap to Pay on iPhone or an Ozync terminal, paid out to your bank in about two business days. Setup is 5–10 minutes — see Stripe Account Setup.

Already on Square? Keep it.

Your Square account, your rate and your Square Terminal all stay. Ozync sends the amount to the Terminal, the client taps, and the money settles with Square as it always has.

Square handles the counter; Stripe handles online. Online payments, pay links and online gift card sales always run on Stripe, so a Square business can connect Stripe too — it's optional. Only Stripe and Square are supported.

With Stripe: Tap to Pay or an Ozync Terminal

Once your Stripe account shows Active, there are two ways to take a card — neither needs a separate reader.

Tap to Pay on iPhone

The iPhone is the reader. Under Settings → Hardware → Tap to Pay on iPhone follow the one-time setup (signed into iCloud; Apple shows its terms once; Ozync asks for location, which card networks require). At checkout the client holds their card, phone or watch to the top of the iPhone.

Ozync payment terminals

The Single-Screen and Dual-Screen Kiosk & Payment Terminals take tap-to-pay on the device itself and arrive already set up for your business. The Dual-Screen one also prints receipts and opens its cash drawer. See Ozync Hardware.

With Square: Connect and Pair the Terminal

ozync.com → Payments → Connect Square

  1. Sign in at ozync.com, open Payments and choose Connect Square. Square asks you to approve Ozync — that's the whole connection.
  2. Back on the Payments page, choose Pair a Square Terminal. A code appears; enter it on the Terminal under its own pairing screen.
  3. In the app, Settings → Payment → Card processor shows Square as connected. Pick which Terminal this device charges on — each iPad or iPhone remembers its own.

At checkout the amount goes to the Terminal, the client taps, and Ozync records the sale in Transactions. Square's dashboard still shows every payment and handles your deposits.

At the Counter

Taking a payment

Open Checkout — or mark the client Served and choose Checkout — confirm the amount, and the client taps. Gift cards and credit come off first if the client has any.

Refunds

Open the sale in Transactions and tap Refund. Card refunds go back through whichever processor took the payment; cash refunds pop the drawer on a Dual-Screen terminal. Stripe treats a same-day refund as a void, so the charge never settles.

Kiosk checkout

Kiosk → Show checkout button lets clients pay themselves on the kiosk device when they're done.

Troubleshooting

"No Square Terminal is paired"

Pairing is done on ozync.com → Payments, not in the app. Pair it there, then pick it under Settings → Payment → Card processor on each device.

"No answer from Square"

The Terminal is asleep, offline or still showing the last screen. Wake it, check its Wi-Fi, and look at it before charging again — the payment may already have gone through.

I have an old Stripe reader or Star printer

External Stripe readers (M2, S700) and Star USB printers were retired in September 2026 and no longer work with Ozync. Cards are Tap to Pay on iPhone, an Ozync terminal, or a Square Terminal; receipts and the cash drawer are on the Dual-Screen terminal.

Can I switch processors later?

Yes — Settings → Payment → Card processor. Past transactions stay in Transactions whichever way they were taken.
